Built in 1907 by V. Everit Macy, a distant cousin to the department store Macy’s and his wife, Edith Carpenter Macy. Designed by Delano and Aldrich, Hathaway’s Arts and Crafts style features American wormy chestnut paneling, eleven massive fireplaces, eight to twelve bedrooms (depending on how you count), each with a semi-private balcony, multiple bathrooms, and twelve servant bedrooms. The carriage house stored seven cars, stalls for four horses and a five room apartment. Hathaway was one of the Macy’s summer homes until the death of Mrs. Macy in 1925. The family maintained Hathaway through depression, then placed it on the market in 1938.
Isadore Martin and Max Reizen purchased Hathaway in an auction for $12,000. Max Reizen and his brother-in-law, Sam Davis, opened Hathaway Lodge and operated from 1941 to 1960 it as a bed and breakfast featuring “Superior American-Jewish Cooking.” Due to a declining economy and the death of Max Reizen, Hathaway Lodge was closed and stood vacant for several years.
In 1965 Mansfield and Annabeth Showers purchased Hathaway for $39,000 and re-opened it as a bed and breakfast. Mansfield converted the carriage house to the Snowdrop Chalet. Hathaway was a successful B&B until the death of Mansfield in 1988. It then reverted to the Showers family home where Annabeth lived until her death at ninety-one in 2003.
With the vision of saving and restoring the buildings the Hunter Foundation purchased Hathaway in 2005. The Hunter Foundation immediately replaced the roof and flashing surrounding the massive chimneys. In 2008 Hathaway was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Under the auspices of Hunter Foundation Hathaway has been open to the public for several events: the HTC Junior Prom; several Greene Room Players performances; a house tour; a Halloween spooky evening and musical performances. The Hunter Foundation also re-designed the pond, and built several hiking trails through two hundred acres of woods. Currently, as with all Hunter Foundation properties, Hathaway is for sale and awaits a new owner who will restore it to its former glory.
